Vitoria Gasteiz, this important industrial city is also known by its very different Basque name of Gazteiz. It is the capital of the largest Basque province, and the seat of the autonomous Basque (Euskadi) government. Vitoria Gasteiz stands on a grey-brown cereal plain flanked by huge reservoirs, and its diverse industries include the production of playing cards and chocolate truffles. The old town of Vitoria Gasteiz surrounds the cathedral in concentric rings, dating back to the days of Sancho the Wise, a 12th-century Navarran king. Glazed balconies and coats of arms grace the seigniorial mansions around the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca in Vitoria Gasteiz, scene of the Duke of Wellington's decisive victory over Napoleon's brother Joseph in 1813.
The Archaeology Museum (Museo de Arqueología Vitoria Gasteiz) is located in a charming, impressively named building, the Casa Armera de los Gobeo-Guevara-San Juan, and its exhibits, from within the province of Álava, include pieces from the Celtiberian and Roman periods.
The Fine Arts Museum (Museo de Bellas Artes) is housed in the Agustín Palace (Palacio Agustín) and displays paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The collection of contemporary Spanish art includes pieces by such luminaries as Picasso and Miró, as well as many Basque artists.
