| Lleida, this Catalan town is known as Lérida in Spanish. Many civilisations left their mark on the town, though sadly, most were destructive. After its last battering during the Civil War, Lleida's main sight, La Seu Vella (old cathedral) was rescued from a long period of service as an army barracks, so enabling its Gothic cloisters and splendidly carved capitals to be properly admired. Its latter-day replacement, an 18th-century building, can be seen on the way down to the newer town. Above the old cathedral of Lleida stands the Moorish fortress La Zuda. Lleida's fortified citadel commands a strategic vantage point over the fruit-growing plains of the Segre Valley, which are still watered by Moorish irrigation systems.
