Take a deep breath and loose yourself in the dreamy vista of one of Italy's most scenic spots, whose deep blue waters have long been known as "the looking glass of Venus". Lake Como or Lario is one of the major lakes of the Country with its 146 square kilometers of surface area; the first for depth, reaching 414 meters between Careno and Argegno, and the third for its vastness among the pre-Alpine lakes. Thirty miles north of Milan, in the Lombard region, Italian lakes dot the land formed by the same glaciers which carved the peaks and valleys of the adjoining Alps. The Alps, lying north of the lakes, shield the area from harsh winter weather and provide a breathtaking backdrop.
Como is the centre of Italy's silk industry. Magnificently situated at the southern tip of Lake Como, it is the focus for trips by lakeside road, or by steamer and hydrofoil, to pretty Cernobbio, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, and Bellagio. Como itself has a magnificent Duomo and a range of other, smaller churches, chief amongst which are 12th-century San Fedele and 11th-century Sant'Abbondio. The Municipal Museum of Como details the city's past from the Neolithic period to World War II, while the art gallery houses a range of local works including some important medieval paintings.
