Lying inland of the Baltic coast, Schwerin at the southwestern corner of Lake Schwerin is set in a fertile, well-irrigated district of "lakelets." Schwerin is the industrial and cultural center of an important agricultural district, but it has more to offer visitors than just commerce. Schwerin, a city of ancient history and well-entrenched civic pride, it was established in the 11th century by Slavs, who fortified a settlement on the island now occupied by Schwerin Castle. Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony, annexed their settlement and used the strategic site to establish the first German-speaking colony east of the Elbe. In 1358, Schwerin was honored with a designation as seat of the ducal court of Mecklenburg, a title it held until the closing days of World War I.
Schweriner Schloss (Schwerin Castle), is the most spectacular monument in town and a triumph of 19th-century civic architecture. This castle, the 19th-century seat of the Mecklenburg grand dukes, was spared from fires and bombings. It's set on an island that separates a small lake (the Burgsee) from a much larger lake (the Schweriner See), and is connected to the German mainland by a pair of bridges. Inspired by the Château de Chambord in France's Loire Valley, Schweriner Schloss is a pentagonal structure of many domes, towers, and turrets, built between 1843 and 1857. Its style incorporates elements of Gothic, baroque, and Renaissance architecture. The castle's chapel (built around 1560) is much older than the larger structure that contains it.
