München (Munich) owes its origins to the 12th-century Duke, Henry the Lion, who diverted the lucrative trade in salt via a new bridge over the Isar so that he could levy taxes. München suffered terribly from World War II bombing; it has since been sensitively restored. This is a cultural city, alive with theatres, galleries and museums. The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), with its two domed towers, is its chosen emblem. The stained-glass windows survived both wars. The heart of München is the Marienplatz (square), with the neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). Ist Glockenspiel can be heard twice daily when the tower comes alive with figures. Near the opera house and the theatre, both restored, is the Königsbau (King's Building) and the entrance to the palace of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled Bavaria for 700 years.
The Munich museums appeal to all tastes and many happy days can be spent exploring their treasures. The Glyptothek exhibits Greek and Roman sculpture, including the famous figures from the Aegina temple. One of the great picture galleries of the world is the Alte Pinakothek, a large building in Venetian Renaissance style, built in 1836 to house the paintings acquired by the Wittelsbach dynasty from the early 16th century. Almost every great name - and every nationality - in painting is represented here, from Peter Bruegel the Elder to da Vinci, from Van Dyck to Tiepolo and El Greco. The Neue Pinakothek, opposite, houses German and French work. The "Deutsches Museum" is one of the most comprehensive science museums in the world. A visit to Schloss Nymphenburg is recommended, this lavishly decorated palace was once the summer residence of the Bavarian rulers.
