The capital of Thuringia, Erfurt was founded in AD 742 and is richly endowed with old buildings, many of which are now being restored. The square known as the Domplatz is overlooked by two great churches, the Petri-Dom and the Severi-Kirche. The River Gera is crossed by the Krämerbrücke, the only bridge north of the Alps still lined with shops. Across the river is Erfurt's other main square, the Anger, with the excellent Angermuseum. Erfurt was the focal point of the former East Germany's horticultural industry, and in the permanent International Garden Exhibition is the fascinating Museum of Gardening.
The Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt, built in the austere Gothic form favoured by the mendicant Orders, was where Luther lived from 1505-1511, firstly as a novice, and later as a monk and priest. Visitors can see a reconstruction of his cell, as well as the cloister and the church, which has notable stained-glass windows, one of which narrates the life of Saint Augustine. Erfurt's cathedral is dramatically set on a sloping hillside. It preserves some Romanesque masonry, but is otherwise Gothic, the French-influenced chancel with its stained-glass windows contrasting with the archetypal German hall nave. In the south transept are the two most notable furnishings, both from the mid-12th century: a candelabrum nicknamed Wolfram, and a stucco altar of The Enthroned Madonna.
