Rouen, built on the banks of the River Seine with magnificent buildings and museums, open park and woodland, Rouen is both a thriving commercial city and an attractive place for touring. From St Catherine's Hill, on the outskirts of Rouen, you can see the iron spire of the Cathédrale Notre Dame towering over the old town, and the famous 14th-century gatehouse with its huge gilt clock. The Musée des Beaux-Arts contains 17th-19th-century paintings, including masterpieces by Velázquez, Monet and Renoir. A large collection of French and foreign ceramics is now housed separately in the nearby Museé de la Céramique.
One of the largest and most magnificent cathedrals in France, the Gothic Notre Dame Cathedral of Rennes was started in the 13th century and completed in the 16th century. An elaborate west front (1509-1530), flanked by two towers, contains a fine doorway. The cast-iron spire, the tallest in France, was added in the 19th century to replace an earlier spire destroyed by fire. The interior was damaged by bombs in 1944. Highlights of the interior are the 11th-century crypt and the Lady Chapel with its 14th-century stained-glass windows and renaissance tombs.
