For ten days at the beginning of July, Rennes lets its hair down at the Tombées de la Nuit Festival, a celebration of Breton music and culture. For the rest of the year the city reverts to its role as dignified capital of Brittany; it is a neoclassical town rebuilt in 1720 after much of the centre was destroyed by fire. Worth a visit in Rennes are the 16th-century Law Courts, which miraculously survived the fire, the Musée de Bretagne, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the 19th-century Cathédrale St Pierre, which contains an elaborately carved wooden altarpiece in a side chapel. The medieval quarter of Rennes, situated near the Portes Mordelaises-the remnants of the city's ramparts-has a lively nightlife.
The Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts Rennes) is renowned for its superb collection of drawings (including two by Leonardo da Vinci) and has a good collection of paintings from the 14th to the 20th century. Early Masters include Veronese and Maerten van Heemskerck; 17th- and 18th-century painters include Rubens and Jordaens, Georges de la Tour, Chardin, and Greuze. Among the 19th-century canvases are those by Corot, Boudin, and Sisley, and the Pont-Aven school is represented by Bernard, Sérusier, and Gauguin (Oranges); 20th-century works include those by Utrillo and Picasso.
