| Bordeaux's appeal remains unchanged since it was first patronised by French and Spanish nobility in the 19th century-its waterfront, consisting of two beaches separated by a rocky promontory, is magnificent. A sense of style still pervades the resort, with sumptuous villas standing back from the seafront. But in the 20th century you don't need to be aristocratic to enjoy Bordeaux-the city caters for all international tourists. The principal focal point is still the main beach, popular in September with the surfing set when the Professional Surfing World Championships are held there.
